Race Analysis

10/26/10 -- There's been some closing of the polls here, but Governor Brewer remains above 50 percent in most polls.  She's still the favorite, though perhaps not by the 20-point margin once assumed.

10/9/10 -- Governor Brewer seems to have endured about everything that an incumbent can endure -- including an embarrassing debate performance -- and yet she remains fully in the driver's seat here.

----------Race Preview---------

At the beginning of the year, Governor Jan Brewer (who assumed the governorship after Janet Napolitano was confirmed as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security) looked like a dead governor walking. She was topping out at around 44 percent in the polls and even trailed her Democratic opponent, Attorney General Terry Goddard, in some samples. Her approval of a tax increase to close the budget gap caused her approval to crater among Republicans, and it wasn’t even clear that she would be the GOP nominee.

Arizona’s controversial immigration bill changed all of that. In the furor that erupted, her base rallied around her, and her lead expanded to where she was above the 50 percent mark.  The Justice Department's lawsuit is unlikely to do anything but help her further.
